Jules Dervaes and his three adult children all live together and work in their family farm in Pasadena, California. They are called eco-pioneers. They say it is a homegrown revolution under way, a way for them to return to a natural life, organic and better. Their mission? To change the world of an urban backyard at a time. California Heartlands Jennifer Quinonez Dervaes visited the house where the top is Jules, a man whose vision was not so clear 23 years ago when he boughtthe 1917 California bungalow for his family. He had just learned that the cost of maintaining a green backyard but difficult to use, a waste of money and resources. He began to act and made a change in the way he lives in a big city. By clearing out the grass and planting an edible garden, began to change. In 1991, Jules found a way to profit from his garden. Area tea rooms needed for its edible flowers, and at that moment he realized that he could cash out of his hobby. Butbiggest change in his life happened in 2001. When food buy organic food too expensive and difficult to find, and GM has been launched, Jules took matters in hand and began the road to freedom. In our small urban city, the family produces 6000 pounds of organic products a year. Its amazing that their house is on an acre 1 / 5 and their garden is only 1 / 10 ha!
